The Right Stuff
You may not realize it, but one of the things that can contribute to dissatisfaction at work is your desktop display. I'm not kidding. I'm sure that you've seen your co-worker's desktops and found that some of them exhibited outrageous or out-of-this wolrd backgrounds. Some may even have those funky animations that do amusing things on the screen. Still, others would even have colorful and sometimes noisy screen savers. One of the most popular animated desktop images is that of the aquarium.

If you find yourself at a loss fro things to do because there simply isn't anything to do, you sometimes stare at your screen. Why not put something there that's nice to stare at? Notice the difference between your monotonous screen and the colorful kaleidoscopes that they have. Don't you find yourself staring, fascinatedly at those aberrations that shouldn't be there in the first place? Truth is, personalizing your desktop isn't a sin. If there are no policies against doing so, why not do it? Your office is not a bank. Even if it were, there will be exceptions to the rule.

Personalizing a desktop is pretty fun. You enter a world of visual and artisitc stimulation which you, perhaps, have never had. The fun of it is, there are thousands, if not millions of different wallpapers, screen savers, animations and themes lingering around in the internet. Hunting down a particular theme in mind is a great challenge in itself. If, and its a big if, you do manage to find what you want, setting it up in the computer and waiting for it all to unfold is a suspensful event. My favourites right now are the Ferrari F1 cars and the Ford Shelby GT concept car. In the future, it may change. When it does, its gonna be fun looking for replacements.

The whole point is, I see something I like instead of an empty screen, or a screen that has something in it which I cannot relate to. Psychologically speaking, personalizing an environment is just your way of making yourself at home. If you can do that in the office, do it. Who knows, going to the office might stop being a drudgery. It can even become one of your comfort zones.
